The annual Malta International Fireworks Festival is organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority. The Grand Harbour will provide the setting for the festival, which takes place on 29th and 30th April 2011.

The best vantage points to enjoy the spectacle will be from Barriera Wharf on the Valletta seafront or from the bastions of the harbour.

There will be lots of firework displays synchronised to music over the two nights, with a variety of Maltese fireworks factories competing for the very best display.

Fireworks in Malta have a long long tradition which goes back to the time of the Order of the Knights of St John. The feu de joie, the musketterija, the solfarelli d’aria, St Catherine’s wheels (irdieden) and other forms of fireworks, originated from explosives that were lit from mortars on special occasions, such as the election of a Grand Master or the birth of a prince.

The Malta Fireworks festival also serves to commemorate Malta’s accession into the European Union that took place on 1st May 2004.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda-affiliated hijackers flew two 767 jets into the complex, one into each tower, in a coordinated terrorist attack. After burning for 56 minutes, the South Tower (2) collapsed, followed a half-hour later by the North Tower (1), with the attacks on the World Trade Center resulting in 2,752 deaths.
On May 1, 2011, in Washington, D.C. (May 2, Pakistan Standard Time), U.S. President Barack Obama announced that Osama bin Laden was killed by "a small team of Americans" acting under Obama's direct orders, in a covert operation inAbbottabad, Pakistan, about 50 km (31 mi) north of Islamabad. He was believed by some to be hiding near the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas, but was hiding in a million-dollar three-story mansion in Abbottabad. The Telegraph identified the compound's specific location on Google maps. The compound is 800 feet (250 meters) from a Pakistani police station, and a few hundred yards from the Pakistan Military Academy (Pakistan's "West Point").
Applying the proceeds of a book deal, the family moved in 2005 from a Hyde Park, Chicago condominium to a $1.6 million house in neighboring Kenwood, Chicago. The purchase of an adjacent lot and sale of part of it to Obama by the wife of developer, campaign donor and friend Tony Rezko attracted media attention because of Rezko's subsequent indictment and conviction on political corruption charges that were unrelated to Obama.
